Celebrities Who Got Matching Tattoos in Honor of Their Roles

Filming for a Netflix series or a movie for several months is a bonding experience only celebrities can understand (although we imagine it’s a fancy summer camp complete with luxurious food, beautiful people and a lot of cameras). The result of that is a strong on-set chemistry that can end in industry esteem, awards and, in some cases, matching tattoos.

Celebrity matching tattoos are a thing in Hollywood since many celebrities have been immortalizing their film experience with permanent ink. Similar to BFF tattoos and couple tattoos, plenty of co-stars from “The Lord Of The Rings” to “The Avengers” have taken their bond to the next level by getting inked together and with interesting tattoo designs.

Here are some of our favorite celebrity matching tattoos and the meanings and stories behind them.

Game of Thrones

“Game of Thrones” didn’t air on HBO until 2011. But two years before its pilot episode aired, the studio had already booked the majority of the cast, which included Sophie Turner as Sansa Stark, Eddard Stark’s eldest daughter. At the same time she was cast, the studio had also cast Maisie Williams who played Arya Stark, who is Sansa’s little sister.

Over the years, Williams and Turner developed a strong sisterly bond that matched the sisters they portrayed. By the time GoT reached its sixth season and had the whole world wanting more, Turner decided to get a matching tattoo with Williams. Both actresses have the date August 7, 2009, inked in red on their forearms. This was the day they were both cast on “Game of Thrones.”

Pretty Little Liars

The most famous “Shhh” or shushing in TV history has been immortalized not only in the show “Pretty Little Liars,” but on the fingers of the six women who starred in PLL.

To celebrate t the series finale of “Pretty Little Liars,” the Liars — namely Lucy Hale, Ashley Benson, Troian Bellisario, Shay Mitchell, Sasha Pieterse and Janel Parrish — got celebrity matching tattoos. All six ladies had their respective characters’ first initials tattooed on their index fingers.

In an Instagram post, Parrish posed with her co-Liars lined up with their index fingers to their lips. In her caption, she said that they immortalized PLL’s trademark “SHH” forever.

On top of the matching tattoos, the PLL cast was also gifted with matching Cartier rings by their showrunner I. Marlene King.

Lord Of The Rings

It may have been a decade since “The Lord of The Rings” graced our cinemas, but we are never to forget the adventure of Frodo and the Fellowship of the Ring. In fact, we’re not the only ones who never want to forget the journey.

Nine members of the cast got celebrity matching tattoos by the end of filming “The Lord of The Rings.” The stars who got matching tattoos are Elijah Wood, Sean Bean, Orlando Bloom, Viggo Mortensen, Dominic Monaghan, Sean Astin, Billy Boyd, Ian McKellen and John Rhys-Davies’ stunt double (Davies declined to get inked).

All nine got the word “nine” in Elvish tattooed on different parts of their bodies. During their reunion at actor Josh Gad’s “Reunited Apart” YouTube series, the cast showed off their matching tattoos. According to the actors, they got their matching tattoos at the same tattoo shop and had to hold each other’s hands just to endure the pain.

Suicide Squad

The cast of “Suicide Squad” took celebrity matching tattoos one step further by actually giving each other matching tattoos.

In 2015, “Suicide Squad” director David Ayer shared photos of Margot Robbie, in her Harley Quinn costume, wielding a tattoo gun. Soon after, other cast members like Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang) and Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flagg) shared their photos of their tattoos. The latter pokes fun at their co-star Will Smith (Deadshot) for saying that he has many talents, except tattooing. Smith did his “Skwad” tattoo.

The Avengers

We spent more than 10 years of our lives investing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Avengers, specifically the original ones. From their origin stories to their time heists and sacrifices, the Avengers wowed the world with memorable scenes and characters. It’s no wonder that the actors behind the original Avengers — Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner and Scarlett  Johansson — wanted to immortalize the moment by getting matching tattoos.

Only Mark Ruffalo was absent for the affair, but the remaining five got modified versions of their Avengers logo tattooed on their skins. Downey Jr. described the moment as a “sweet” one, even though he wasn’t a big fan of getting tattoos.

Tattoo artist Josh Lord gave the Avengers their matching tattoos, and the cast repaid him by getting inked with his art. Evans even shared a video of the tattoo artist’s needle on his leg.

13 Reasons Why

The cast of “13 Reasons Why” and their executive producer, Selena Gomez” inked a permanent bond that is also in line with mental health awareness. Gomez and cast members Tommy Dorfman and Alisha Boe honored the series’ protagonist Hannah Baker by getting matching tattoos of a black semicolon, which is a symbol popularized by Project Semicolon, a mental health awareness and suicide prevention organization. The show’s protagonist, Hannah Baker, took her life and explained why she did so by sending seven audio cassettes that listed 13 reasons behind her suicide.

Celebrity matching tattoos are a great way for stars to memorialize their great times on set. Which matching tattoo is your favorite?
